Step by step: Painting a Sturmgeschütz 40 Ausf. G
This article shows how I have painted my WWII German Sturmgeschütz 40 Ausf. G model.
This model is a very new and detailed 1:72 scale kit from Revell. It represents a late version of the StuG40G with the Saukopf gun mantlet.

Basecoating
I started by partially assembling the model. The superstructure top and the hull bottom have been kept seperate so that the tracks can be applied easier later.
The main body has been sprayed with a Medium Brown, and a Sand over that. The tracks were sprayed Black and Gunmetal.

Brown Strips
I started by airbrushing the Medium Brown strips on first. Remember to leave space for the Green strips.

Green Strips
This was followed by the Olive Green strips. At this stage, I started to drybrush a light layer of Sand to catch the edges of the body.

Blackening
Next, I glued on the tracks and glued the two body halves together. Black paint was applied to the road wheels, spare tracks, machine guns and the muzzle brake.
I followed with a Black wash over the body work, letting the wash flow into the grooves of the model. Experiement with the level of dilution for the Black wash. The model will have a muted and greyed out lok when you wash it with Black.
The tank crew is from the Pz Kpfw VI Ausf. B set by ESCI/Italeri.

Finishing Up
I finished up by giving the model a drybrush of Buff. Details such as the fire extinguisher, periscopes and crewmen are painted at this stage. I painted the muzzle brake and the tracks with a mixture of Black and Gunmetal.
Assault guns were initially placed under the command of the Artillery, so the crewmen wore a Feldgrau version of the Panzertruppen uniform instead of the usual black.
Conclusion
People have commented that I paint my 1:72 scale AFV like I do figures, and I can't dispute that. I paint with quite a harsh highlight which is absent from how modellers would paint their AFV. The intentions is to let the model shine out on the gaming table.
I hope parts of this article have been helpful to you. These are the paints I have used. Either because I like the quality of the paints or the tone of the colours.
