Lizardmen

I have liked the Lizardmen army for many years, but never got around to starting an army. I prefered the man-in-the-rubber-suit look of the old Lizardmen army and got them instead of the newer range. It also helped that I could now get the figures at a fraction of the price.

I decided to paint the Lizardmen figures with the designs of exisiting reptiles, so trawled through the Internet for interesting pictures of reptiles. Here are some of the results.

Core Troops

I decided to paint the Saurus resembling the designs of desert lizards. They would be predominanty sandy or grey in colour, with stripes and patterns. The visual link between the units are the bases and the colours of the equipment, bronze, dark red and turquoise.

The Skinks were painted to resemble colour patterns of frogs. Since poisonous frogs tend to have very bright colours, I thought they would look good on the Skinks.

Jungle Swarms. These are rather nice to paint. Every lizard was painted differently, and there was ample space to dress up the bases with puddles and plants.

Special Troops

The Kroxigors are modelled after water monitors. I fabricated the spearhead of the third Kroxigor from the left. The spiked club on the first Kroxigor is modified from an Orc weapon.

A simple tilt of the head give these guys a lot more variety and make them look more dynamic and natural. The stripes make them look more realistic as reptiles.

I decided to keep the Skinks on the Terradons simple, so the Terradons themselves can stand out more. Again, there is plenty of chances to dress up the bases and hide the support stem.

The puddles on some of the bases are done by painting Tamiya Smoke over a brown base. Tamiya Smoke is transluscent but is neither an ink or a wash. It is gooey and puddles up hard and shiny. It is great for shading metals.

The plants are aquarium plants that I bought for less than US$4 for a mat that is 1' x 1'. You can see the mat in the background of the pictures. Individual plants can be removed from the mat, and I cut stalks out of these plants to glue onto the bases.

This is a work in progress and as more figures are painted, I will add more pictures. Watch this space.
