Greek Support Troops

Peasant javelinmen.

The Greek nobility cavalry did not carry shields and were only armed with javelins and swords. It was only at a later stage that the Greeks supported their hoplite phalanxes with light infantry and cavalry.

Thessaly is a northern province of Greece. It was quite different from the rest of Greece because of the large plains where good horses were raised. They were the first of the Greeks to feel the wrath of Alexander the Great. These are Thessalian medium cavalry. Their helmets are similar to the Phyrgian style.

Thessalian light horsemen are unarmoured and operated in a loose formation. A beautiful painting on pottery show the features of these horsemen clearly.

Later formed Peltasts. They are good for holding difficult terrain and can defeat enemy light troops.

Greek tents from Baueda, and the Oracle of Delphi sacrificing a sheep. The figure is a Screaming Women from the Celt range from Chariot Miniatures. The sheep is from Corvus Belli.

This was a nice army to paint, since almost every figure could be painted uniquely, if only just the shield.
