Step by Step: Converting Salamanders from Cold Ones

I did these convertions for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I had a few spare old Cold Ones lying around from an eBay purchase, and did not have any Salamander figures. Secondly, I did not think the old Dimetrodon looking Salamander could move fast, as the rules suggest. And finally, because I thought Salamanders that looks like Spinosaurus would be cool.

Here's a nice drawing of a Spinosaurus that I nicked off the web somewhere. It was featured in Jurassic Park III as the star big predator.

Okay, so Cold Ones look nothing like Spinosaurus, spines or no spines. These were Cold Ones from the Dark Elf range. Which meant that I had to saw off the saddle and strap.

A matter of drilling holes into the back of the Cold One figures and gluing on some copper wire as the spines.

My green stuff sculpting sucks, hopefully I will be able to cover up the rough sculpting with decent painting. It did not turn out as nice as I had envisioned, but I cannot put a finger on what looks wrong. Perhaps the spines should not stretch all the way back to the tail, but if it did not, it would be tiny.

On the other hand, it was not as hard as I had feared. I thought about this conversion over a year ago, and have pushed it back till now.

Here is a photograph of a painted Salamander.

I converted some Skink Handlers for my converted Salamanders. They are made from the old plastic Skink archers. I chopped off their bows and replaced them with a thrusting weapon made from plastic broom bristles. The bucklers are from the Terradon set.

These figures can be used as Skinks armed with Javelins and Shield as well.

Stay tuned and I should hopefully have more painted images soon.
